From St Aldhelm's head
Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink wash on paper
A view in ink of the range of the coast from St Aldhelm's Head in Dorset to the Isle of Wight. St Aldhelm was the Bishop of Sherborne in the late-7th century, and there is a small chapel on the clifftop in his honour. For unknown reasons, local people also referred to it as the Devil's Chapel.
Sailors mistakenly called the area St Alban's Head, after the first martyr in Britain, executed in the 3rd century.
