View of Fountains Abbey, one of the best loved and most picturesque of ruined monastic houses. John Byng, Viscount Torrington visited in 1792 and exclaimed, "What a Beauty and perfection of ruin!! The steeple is complete; and every part in proper keeping, except the Cloister Garden, which is infinitely too spruce; the ground of rubbish, of great depth, has been clear'd away, (as it should be done, but never is, in similar ruins) to the flooring, or that level". Here he is referring to the work of owner William Aislabie of the Studley Royal Estate who restored the site of Fountains Abbey and made it into a picturesque tourist attraction.
