View of Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire, showing it position on a high rocky spur overlooking the right bank of the River Wye. The natural slope of the valley gives the castle protection. It is mostly built of local pink sandstone. The oldest part of the castle is the Norman square keep made of grey stone and dating from the mid 12th century. The castle was enlarged in the late 13th century by the de Valence family who enclosed the keep in a quadrangle with cylindrical tower and huge gatehouse.
