Hampstead Heath is situated on a point of high ground with views of north London in the distance. It was visited by Londoners after the discovery of a spring in 1698. Highgate is another settlement to the north which was centred on high ground around a hill. Devonshire Street was built in 1780s, named after the Duke of Devonshire, on the site of the former Marylebone Gardens.
