Kirkby in Ashfield Church, procession of the schoolchildren

Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink wash on paper
Date: 1786
View in ink of the north-western part of St Wilfrid's church. Grimm painted this scene during a visit to Kirkby to see his friend and patron, the Rector, the Reverend Sir Richard Kay. The scene of Kirkby children, with the boys and girls neatly lined up processing into church, is typical of Grimm's interest in recording people in everyday social situations.
