In 1575 Thomas Howard (Viscount Binden), Vice Admiral of Dorset, built his imposing Jacobean home on the site of Binden Abbey. It was rumoured that Howard had dealings with pirates and smugglers - a common problem on the Dorset coast - even though as Vice Admiral it was his job to put an end to such dastardly activities!
