Lincoln Cathedral, east front
Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink on paper
An outline view in ink of the east front of Lincoln Cathedral. The main feature of this front is the magnificent central window in the geometrical Decorated style. Above this is another fine window of the same period: balanced on the apex of the central window, and is perhaps a little too large for its gable. In the trefoil over the top is a figure of the Virgin with the Infant Saviour. The aisle windows are filled with beautiful early stained-glass. The two panelled gables over the aisle windows are what is known as 'shams': there is nothing behind them, and they were most likely designed purely for effect.
