In 1643 the Royalist leader Sir Bevil Grenville fought an important battle in the English Civil War at Lansdown. This monument, with its rusticated stone base and square shaft decorated with arms and inscriptions and crowned by a griffin, was erected in 1720 to commemorate the battle and Grenville who died a hero in combat.
