"Amongst the latest structures of any consequence, erected within a few years, in this part of the county, is Luscombe, the seat of Charles Hoare, Esq. It may be sufficient to mention the name of Mr. Nash as the architect, to insure a strong prepossession of the style and taste of the building. It unites, an external appearance of great picturesque beauty, shewn by towers, battlements, buttresses, pinnacles, and mullioned windows, with, what is so dear to an Englishman, such an attention to the comfort of the interior, as to render it as desirable a residence as any in the country."

This extract is taken from T H Williams' "Picturesque Excursions in Devonshire: The Environs of Exeter" [1815].
