Mansfield grew from being a small agricultural community into a prosperous market town, known also as a centre of framework knitting. At the end of the 18th century industrialization came to the area. Farming as the main source of local employment and wealth generation was gradually replaced by the opening of the mills. These transformed the textile industry as well as bringing other industries to the area.
