Mamhead dates back to Norman times and has seen a suuccession of owners over its 900 year history. By the 17th century, the grounds were renowned throughout the country for its extensive plantations and more formal gardens. When Buckler visited Mamhead, William Newman, MP for Exeter, had recently purchased the estate. Newman set about modernising the 17th-century house and the grounds.
