The Mamhead estate dates back to Norman times, but the house in this collection of drawings was built in the mid-17th century. In the 1680s, the 1st Earl of Lisburne, who had inherited the estate through marriage, extended the park boundaries and added plantations of trees. Mamhead became renowned for its formal gardens and botanical collections.

At the time of Buckler's visit to Mamhead, the Hall belonged to Robert Newman, MP for Exeter, who undertook an extensive modernisation of the estate.
