When the MP for Exeter, Robert Newman, bought the Mamhead estate in 1823, he set about an expensive modernisation of the house and grounds. During the 17th century, the then owner, the 1st Earl of Lisburne, created one of the most stunning parks in the country, which was renowned for its extensive botanical specimens, as well as the commanding views over much of Devon and surrounding counties.
