This watercolour is a view from the Fellows Gardens at Merton College, Oxford. St. Alban"s quad lies at the centre of the picture, with the chapel tower seen further back towards the right.

Merton College was founded by Walter de Merton, Lord Chancellor of England, in 1264. The college possesses one of the UK's oldest serving libraries. Together with the college chapel in the 'Mob quad' it forms the earliest portion of the premises. St. Alban"s Quad adjoins the Fellows Quad to the west and is much younger, being rebuilt in the twentieth century.
