This may be a view of the White Hart Inn, a supreme example of late 15th-century timber-framed architecture. Wooden buildings were common until the mid-17th century until brick became the major material for the construction industry.

Newark has long been an important town in the area with settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. Its prosperity grew due to its position on several trade routes.
