Like its near-neighbour Brockley, the hamlet of New Cross was largely untouched by the industrial revolution until the late 19th century. The continued expansion of Deptford and Greenwich shipworks and factories changed things, however, and New Cross was gradually developed into a dormitory town for dockland workers.
