View of the dramatic ruins of Netley Abbey, which were romanticised by poets and writers. The Cistercian Abbey of Netley was founded in the 13th century the by Bishop of Winchester, Peter des Roches. It was converted into a private residence for Sir William Paulet after the dissolution of religious houses in the 16th century. In c.1700, a new owner the Earl of Hertford dismantled much of the abbey and sold off its stone to be reused elsewhere.
