On the road to Failand Inn from Bristol

Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink wash on paper
Date: 1788

A view in ink of a hill and lime kiln near Leigh Down in Somerset, on the road going to Failand Inn. The inn was along the Clevedon Road heading out of Bristol. Inns were the only place to stay for 18th-century travellers and diarists often commented on the quality of the rooms, food and drink available, rather like an early version of the modern day travel-guide.
