This mansion, near Combe Down in Somerset, was built for Ralph Allen between 1735 and 1750 by the architect John Wood the Elder (also responsible for many of the new building developments in Bath). It was built of Bath stone from Allen's Combe Down quarries and financed from the fortune he made supplying the building materials for the rebuilding of 18th-century Bath. The mansion succeeded in becoming one of the most complete re-creations of a Palladian villa in England.
