These gardens make up part of the estate belonging to Ralph Allen, who between 1735 and 1750 built a Palladian style villa here. The house lies on a hillside with grounds sloping down to the nearby village of Widcombe. The gardens were landscaped by Capability Brown and Alexander Pope and contained several ornamental features to impress visitors - such as a Palladian Bridge and a castle folly.
