Sir Edward Herbert bought Powis Castle in 1587 and successive generations set about transforming the castle from a fortress into a fine stately home, complete with beautifully landscaped gardens and surrounding woodland. In 1784 a daughter of the Herbert family married the son of Lord Clive ("Clive of India"), and the castle came to acquire an impressive collection of Indian artworks and military items.
