This watercolour is of Penshurst Place from the surrounding gardens. Penshurst is one of the Britain's best preserved medieval houses. The site dates from the 13th century and has been home to the Sidney family for over four hundred years. Henry VIII attended a banquet here, and Ben Jonson wrote admiringly about the formal terraced gardens. The main hall is magnificent, possessing a unique octagonal hearth and large chestnut ceiling. The house boasts tapestries, paintings and original panelling, the latter of which is found in the fine Long Gallery.
