The Fitzhugh family built Ravensworth Castle in the 14th century. The original structure had three towers and an arched gateway strengthened by a portcullis. The castle was abandoned in the 16th century and it gradually fell into ruin as local inhabitants used it as a stone quarry for new building needs.
