Rewley Abbey was founded in 1281 by Edmund, Earl of Cornwall. It belonged to the Cistercian Order and acted also as a theological college, admitting annually a number of monks from Cistercian communities around the country to pursue their studies. It fell into disuse after Henry VIII closed down the monasteries in 1539. No remains can be seen today.
