A north-west view of the newly built Church of St Margaret at Crossgate in Durham. This had been a site of worship since the tenth century. Built in 1749, this was the third church here. The previous building had been undermined, literally, by its curate, who hoped to make a private profit from his tunnelling activities. He was stopped by legal decree, but the damage was already done, and this church had to be built in its place.
