St Sepulchre Church, Northampton, The Octagon f.147

Artist: Grimm, Samuel Hieronymus
Medium: Ink wash on paper
Date: 1773

View of the interior of Holy Sepulchre Church in Northampton, founded in c.1110 by Crusader Simon de Senlis, Earl of Northampton. The church was originally a round Norman Church, a design favoured by the Orders of Knights Templars and Knights Hospitallers, very few of which have survived. The rotunda shape is reminiscent of the Holy Sepulchre Church in Jerusalem. This view is likely to be of the round nave.
