St Mary's Church was built bewteen 1197 and 1215 by Bishop Eustace on the site of an earlier church beside the cathedral. The building contains a mixture of Norman and Early English (1175-1275) features and a western tower with a hexagonal spire from the Decorated period (14th century). On the south-west buttress of the tower is a tablet which records the burial of five local men, executed in 1816 at Ely for taking part in robberies during riots in May of that year.
