St David founded a monastery here in the 6th century and over the next few centuries it became an important destination for pilgrims wishing to visit his venerated remains. Despite its geographical isolation (it is the westernmost town in Wales), St David's Cathedral was founded here in 1131 and building began 50 years later. Over its 900 year history the cathedral has been visited by monarchs, armies, vandals, thieves and even earthquakes!
