On 5 July 1643 the Royalists won a decisive battle against the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War at Lansdown. A monument was erected here to commemorate the bravery of the Royalist Sir Brevil Grenville, who was felled by an axe-blow whilst opposing the charge of the Parliamentary cavalry.
