The Roman Eagle, Church Street, Deptford, 1840 f.64
This watercolour shows the ‘Old Roman Eagle’ Public House and Assembly Rooms. Situated in Church Street, these meeting rooms would have been a popular venue with both locals and those passing through Deptford to London. Social gatherings such as dances and card games would have been held here as well as political meetings and business transactions. Church Street today is a busy dual carriage way and nothing remains of the 19th-century buildings.
