View of the gatehouse and part of the Abbey at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. Daniel Defoe visited here in the early 18th century commented 'The great old church at Tewkesbury may indeed be call'd the largest private parish church in England; I mean that is not a collegiate or cathedral church'. At the dissolution of the abbey in the 16th century, the abbey church was sold to the town people as their church. It is truly impressive with a huge Norman central church tower - the largest in England and inside a great collection of tomb monuments to the great medieval families such as the Despensers, Beauchamps and de Clares.
