This watercolour depicts the exterior of Tewksbury Abbey in Gloucestershire.

The site of the abbey has been a focus of worship for 1,300 years. The present building dates from the 11th Century and boasts the largest Norman tower in England. The abbey became involved in the battle of Tewksbury in 1471, where battle-weary Lancastrian soldiers sought sanctuary from the victorious Yorkists. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540, the abbey was purchased by the citizens of Tewksbury for the pricey sum of £453.
