This watercolour is a view of Valle Crucis Abbey, seen nestled in the shadow of the Berwyn mountains in Wales. Founded as a Cistercian abbey in 1201, Valle Crucis gradually developed despite repeated setbacks such as fire and local disputes. It emerged as one of the richest Cistercian abbeys in Britain, second only to Tintern. Its fate was sealed, however, with the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537.
