A distant view in ink of Windsor Castle in Berkshire and Eton College in Buckinghamshire, taken from the road between the Windmill Inn and Eton Playground.

William the Conqueror founded Windsor Castle over 900 years ago. This site was favoured over others due to its proximity to London - only one day's march to the Tower of London. Its elevated position over the River Thames was an obvious strategic advantage, and there were also several hunting-grounds close by.

Eton College was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, who also founded Kings College, Cambridge one year later. Eton still exists today as a world-renowned boys boarding school.
