Wollaton Hall was built by Robert Smythson between 1580 and 1588 for the wealthy coal merchant Sir Francis Willoughby. Smythson was also architect of another important Elizabethan house, Hardwick Hall. The two are possibly the greatest examples of this period of architecture in the country. Both were built on a truely lavish scale and the interiors would have contained art and furnishings of the most exquisite and expensive taste.
