This watercolour depicts the tower and spire of the parish church at West Retford in Nottinghamshire. The church is devoted to St. Michael and possesses a fine, crocketed octagonal spire, which is characteristic to Licolnshire. The spire, together with the tower, forms the oldest part of the church, dating from the 14th Century. The prevailing style of the present building is mostly perpendicular. Records indicate that the site was founded in the 13th Century.
