This lively pencil drawing is of the gatehouse entrance to Wingfield Castle in Suffolk.

Wingfield is a superb 14th century fortified building. It was built by Michael de la Pole, 1st Earl of Suffolk, in 1385. Square in plan, this impressive structure can be

reached by a bridge which spans an encircling moat. The gatehouse is a three-storeyed construction, dominated by large polygonal turrets. Although parts of the castle were rebuilt in the 16th century, the battlemented facade has remained largely unaltered.
