List of Castles, Parks and Forests in Radnor, Brecknock, Cardigan and Caermarthen
Author: William Cecil, Lord Burghley
Medium: Ink on parchment
This is a page from an atlas that belonged to William Cecil Lord Burghley, Elizabeth I’s Secretary of State. Burghley used this atlas to illustrate domestic matters. It is a list of castles, parks and forests for Radnor, Brecknock, Cardigan and Caermarthen. Knowledge of this sort was important from a military point of view as castles provided an opportunity for defence or attack, parks provided a place for troops to camp and rest and forests to hide, or cause an obstruction on route. This list accompanies a map of the area.
