Map of Coasts of Norway and Russia
Cartographer: Borough, William
Medium: Ink and pigments on vellum
This is a manuscript map of the coasts of Norway (north of Trondhjem), Lapland and north-west Russia by William Borough, navigator and Comptroller of the Queen's Navy. Borough travelled to Russia in 1557, and subsequently made yearly voyages to St Nicholas. It forms part of an atlas that belonged to William Cecil Lord Burghley, Elizabeth I’s Secretary of State. Burghley used this atlas to illustrate domestic matters.
