This chart, from an atlas by an unknown chartmaker porbably working in Venice, shows an awareness of most of the eastern and southern coastlines of the British Isles stemming from voyages of Venetian galleys to the area since 1300. The west and northern-most coasts of Great Britain are relatively bare and Ireland incorporates legends about the purgatory of St Patrick with some releastic coastal information particularly along the west coast. Its purpose - to act as a guide for navigators and merchants - accounts for the way in which it depicts the British Isles, which is very different from that to be found in English-made maps or Ptolemaic maps of the period.
