Von den Britannischen inseln Albione das ist Engelland und Hibernia
Cartographer: Münster, Sebastian
This image of the British Isles is by Sebastian Munster and dates from 1550 and was produced at Basle, where Munster, a mathematician, geographer and eminent hebraist, was professor of Hebrew at the University. In 1544 he published his Cosmographia, a compendium of historical, legendary and geographical information, for which he is best known. This map is from the 1550 edition of the Cosmographia to which Munster added several smaller woodcut maps, inserting these into the text. The image of the British Isles presented here is rather distorted, Wales appears as a narrow necked peninsular and Scotland leans exaggeratedly to the east in a Ptolemaic fashion. There are very few place names, London, Edinburgh and Dover are marked by small clusters of buildings.
