One of the final images of the sketchbook, Dedication of Monument on Bull Run Battle-field, taken by William Morris Smith, shows an early post-war commemoration from June 1865. The monument was dedicated to the Union dead who fell at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, the first significant army engagement of the Civil War.

Gardner describes how the dedication service included hymns, a military parade and addresses by veteran officers. Another memorial dedication service took place nearby to those who fought in the Second Battle of Bull Run. This marks one of the first memorial commemorations on the battlefields of the Civil War, a practice that continues to this day.
