Britain's navy after the Battle of Waterloo was the 'envy of the world' and was supreme of all naval powers. During the 19th Century there was a complete transformation of technology and this transformed the navy's fleet of ships. HMS Warrior was commissioned and built of iron (which is why they came to be known as ironclads) and eventually all the old wooden ships were replaced. Bigger guns were mounted in revolving turrets and steam power replaced sails. This was a navy to be proud of, and songs like this were very popular with audiences all over the country.
