Between 1720 and 1800 trade between Britain and the colonies tripled and as many as 1,800 vessels were competing for only 500 mooring spaces. The West India docks took two years to complete, covered an area of 295 acres between Limehouse and Blackwall, on the left bank of the Thames and they opened on 21st August, 1802. Many thousands of people worked in the docks. They loaded, moved and unloaded the huge quantities of goods traded through the docks and thus were a ready source of inspiration for popular music.
