The lyrics of this song convey the idea of Wales' landscape as picturesque villages nestling in beautiful settings, high mountains, rolling hills and lush valleys. The illustration shows a mountain with boats on a lake in the foreground. The song was a kind of tourist advertising for Wales presenting a romanticised and idealistic view of the country. Until the 18th Century Wales was a predominantly rural country, but throughout the Victorian period there was an explosion of mining, quarrying, iron manufacturing and other related industries. By 1851 as many as two-thirds of the families of Wales were supported by activities other than agriculture.
