Cornwall Railway Quadrilles part 06
Composer: Hempel, Charles F
Popular music reflected developments in technology and industry as well as leisure and entertainment and we can learn much from them. Until the middle of the 19th Century Cornwall was an isolated county with few visitors. The roads were dangerous and the seas forbidding. Brunel's railway bridge at Saltash was completed in 1859 and this opened a whole new area to the travellers of Britain. The railway was eventually extended along the southern coast line which brought visitors right down to Penzance in the far South Western tip of the county. The railway also helped Cornish agriculture as fruit and vegetables could be transported to London to be sold.
