Music Hall songs tended to use local places and occupations to give some reality to their tales and this song is set in Camden Town. On the way to Bow on the underground train the gentleman meets a lady on her way to Camden Town. He decides to join her and she takes him to meet her mother who is a 'mangle', (we can assume that means she is a washer-woman). He courts her and takes her to Kew to view the gardens and in true Music Hall fashion there is a happy ending when he marries her in spite of their class differences.
