Alfred or 'The Great' Vance, started his career as a solicitor's clerk in Lincoln's Inn Fields, he then ran his own dancing school and even had his own one man show before turning to the Music Hall stage as one of the 'Lions Comiques'. This song, was an ideal opportunity for him to demonstrate his ability to play the cheerful cockney. By the 19th century, Covent Garden had developed into an area popular with bohemian artists, journalists and writers who frequented its many coffee houses and taverns. In his flamboyant costumes, Vance would have parodied these characters and gently mocked their ways of life.
