Songs from the 19th Century can tell us a lot about the period. Street purveyors of shell fish found their customers in the poor areas of London, such as Whitechapel and Lambeth. Hawkers would travel across the city selling their cockles and mussels sprinkled in malt vinegar. It is interesting to see how fashions change, oysters, now highly sought after, were once the food of the poor. They were eaten by the hundred and were so common that they were even made into sausages. They were usually sold in bags for about 6 shillings, and this contained about one hundred and sixty quarts.
