Alfred Concanen's illustrations were noted for their witty representations of London scenes and characters. He was the most prolific of Music Hall artists and his gift for observation and attention to detail made his pictures really come to life. This song contains many references to well known sights and sounds in London, a clergyman visiting friends is overwhelmed by the city and tells of his troubles finding his way around. Someone treads on his 'mud punchers' (feet) on Westminster bridge, he has his new clothes stolen and when he rides on an omnibus, his eggs are crushed by another passenger.
